Microsoft last week revealed a price hike in Microsoft Certifications that'll go into effect throughout many parts of the world starting in July.

The price hikes will affect the following certifications: Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS), Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD), Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST), Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD), Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD), Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA).

Microsoft said it doesn't expect to increase the price of Microsoft Certified Master (MCM), Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA), Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA), and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification exams.

Microsoft isn't raising the price of exams uniformly around the world: The retail price for Microsoft Certification exams in the U.S. and Canada will rise from $125 to $150, but it'll remain unchanged in counties like Ireland, Spain and Greece, whose economies are still shaky.

Microsoft says it'll use the price hike to improve the Microsoft Certification program with new certifications and question types, as well as frequent exam updates and better exam security.

The move came as a surprise to partners, and those who've been adjusting their businesses to meet the new terms of Microsoft Partner Network (MPN) said the timing is unfortunate. However, Microsoft plans to offer partners "substantial savings" on exam fees for Microsoft Certifications required to attain MPN competencies. Details on these offers are on the agenda for this year's Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC), to be held from July 10-14 in Los Angeles.

MPN adds a great deal of weight to the technical skills partners carry, and many have had to make difficult choices as part of their migration to MPN. In MPN, the old Gold and Silver rankings are now being used as indicators of a partner's skill level within 29 distinct MPN technology competencies.

To obtain Gold, partners must hire or contract with four Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs), and the requirement for Silver is two MCPs. This is in addition to the business model changes Microsoft is pressing partners to make as part of the software giant's march in cloud computing.

In light of all these changes, it's understandable that some partners would be irked by the addition of an additional cost burden.

"Not only are we eating administrative costs to realign ourselves with Microsoft, we’re coming off a tough few years of lackluster IT spending and dealing with cloud solutions that are trying to capture a significant amount of value from the channel ecosystem," said Travis Fisher, executive vice president at Inacom Information Systems, a Salisbury, Md.-based solution provider. "I can’t imagine a worse time for increased certification costs to take effect than right now."

Next: Certifications Are Just Part Of Microsoft Partners' Costs

Microsoft, through its testing partner Prometric, offers a 30 percent discount to partners that purchase an 8-pack of exam vouchers, which includes one free "re-take" for those who don't pass the first time. There are seven exams required for the MCSE certification, which adds up to $1,050 without the discount.

But as Fisher notes, exams costs are only part of the equation when it comes to obtaining a Microsoft certification. When everything is taken into account, he estimates that Inacom invests around $10,000 per person for certifications every three to five years.

"Let’s be honest: The real costs of obtaining any certification come in the form of boot camps, which cost around $3,500 per week, payroll expenses, and lost productivity," Fisher said.

It's unlikely that higher certification costs are going to dissuade Microsoft partners that have begun their move to MPN, particularly because like MPN itself, the exam price hike will likely give partners better visibility and differentiation within the Microsoft channel.

"This will definitely raise costs in the short-term, but fewer partners will achieve and maintain these certs, allowing them to differentiate themselves as experts in a way that other partners can’t," said Rick Oppedisano, executive director of partner and channel Sales at Azaleos, a Seattle-based Microsoft solution provider.

Dave Sobel, CEO of Evolve Technologies, a Fairfax, Va.-based Microsoft partner, was surprised by the price hike, but says it won't affect his company's MPN plans.

"It's unfortunate that it's coming in the midst of our move over to MPN, and it matters because we're trying to get a bunch of people trained," he said. "But Microsoft has long been quite generous in giving training incentives to partners, and this isn't an unreasonable increase."

The A-level exam results are out in the UK. Over 350,000 teenagers have been placed on undergraduate courses, according to UCAS, the organization that manages applications to UK full-time higher education courses. And while they jump for joy, excited at the prospect of going to university, some social commentators and education critics are harrumphing.

They feel that despite their success, these exam-savvy youngsters are woefully ill-prepared for the real world. And that the ones who go to university are simply entering outdated institutions that don’t prepare them for the world of work.

Most university courses aren’t vocational. Yet, the debts that mount up throughout a course (an average of £50,000) are forcing students to create a “personal brand” and a portfolio of work before they leave – so that they have a chance of competing in a crowded marketplace once they graduate.

In the past, students were only expected to step-up their writing, thinking and analytical skills while at university. Now, they’re expected to take Instagram-worthy internships and use social media to network their way to success. They’re expected to document their skills and capabilities across a range of social media so that they can effectively secure work opportunities.

A report from the Department of Education showed that in 2017, graduates and postgraduates had higher employment rates than non-graduates. And that the average, working-age graduate earned £10,000 more than the average non-graduate.

So good, so far. But this emphasis on securing work is contributing to a hole in their university life. This manifests as poorer quality reading and writing skills on the essays they write throughout their course. And the writing they do in the business world. This is not new. And it’s not down to youngsters spending more time on Snapchat than perusing the abridged works of Shakespeare. But it’s a skill gap that doesn’t seem to be closing.

Many arrive at university after years of teachers “teaching to the test”. Students haven’t necessarily been given the opportunity to think for themselves. At least, not in an academic sense. Their teachers have been judged on results throughout their teaching careers. So, their primary task hasn’t been to help students to write fluently, or accurately. In fact, while 26.4% of exams scored an A or A*, just 1.8% of English language exams were graded A*. Overall, the teachers have done their jobs, which has been to get their pupils to pass. And the overall pass rate for 2018 sits at 97.6%.

But when school leavers get to university, many will find themselves in a quandary. It’s likely that they’ll feel a pressure “to get their money’s worth”. Yet, they’ll also be faced with a barrage of new concepts and theories. And they may not have the writing skills to communicate them effectively. Ironically, this can hamper their chances in the job market.

A Royal Literary Fund report called “Writing Matters” labeled the writing skills of students “shocking” and “inadequate”. What’s more, an academic survey cited in this report found that 90% of lecturers said it was necessary to teach writing skills to students. Yet, university is structured so that the teaching of writing skills is not embedded into courses. It’s a veritable chicken-and-egg situation.

In any case, qualifications alone don’t sell themselves anymore. So, students need to see themselves as a package, not as a vessel for their exam results. They need to hone their soft skills – their ability to think well, write well, be emotionally intelligent and communicate with themselves and others.  Employers want to hire people who are creative, resourceful and resilient.

So, as students crack open the prosecco and celebrate their results – I say we give them a break. Going to university is a massive life transition in itself, as is starting work for the first time. It’s easy to forget the days when you couldn’t boil an egg. And it’s easy to forget that it’s the system itself that isn’t teaching students the writing and communication skills they need to truly succeed in life and work.

How Will Microsoft Measure ‘Starfield’ Success In The Xbox Game Pass Era?

There is little question that Starfield will be the most important game ever to launch on Xbox Game Pass, more so than Forza, Halo Infinite, anything else that’s come before it.

But it raises an interesting question. How will the success of the game be measured using non-traditional metrics, where usually we’d see big “$800 million opening weekend” type headlines for huge releases. Games in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series have sold tens of millions of lifetime copies, but because of Game Pass, it will not hit those high water marks. Though Microsoft probably won’t mind.

The way I see it, there are a few different paths that will add up to significant revenue, albeit we won’t get one of those “big opening day/weekend/week” numbers the way we’re used to. And of course, this is missing PlayStation entirely, a first for a mainline Bethesda RPG release. But, the measurements:

Increased Game Pass Subscriptions – This is what Microsoft wants to see more than absolutely anything else. While no, Starfield will not sell nearly as many $70 standalone copies as it would normally, if Microsoft can get new Game Pass signups, and get them to stick, that’s $17 a month indefinitely. They’d make up that $70 price point in four months. If they really stay long-term, that’s $200 a year. Though it remains to be seen what the “ceiling” is on Game Pass, where if you own an Xbox and don’t have it by now, are you ever going to be a convert? Microsoft is hoping Starfield will move that needle.

Premium Edition Upgrades – We are living in the “pay more and get early access” era, where if you ware a die-hard fan and want to play Starfield a week early, starting on September 1, you will have to pay for the Digital Premium Edition, a $30 upcharge. It does include a couple pieces of in-game gear, but more importantly, a future story expansion that will otherwise be sold separately. So, if Microsoft sells loads of these editions, each one is above and beyond the “free” Game Pass version of the game, and that could add up quickly.

Steam – Bethesda games have always been massive on Steam and Starfield is unlikely to be an exception. The modding community kept games like Skyrim alive for years, and it would be reasonable to expect big Starfield sales on the platform for those who can run it on their PCs and want to own it outside of the Game Pass/Xbox ecosystem. So, many more “full” sales here.

Despite all this, it is hard for me to think that if this was just a traditional Bethesda release, $70 on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, it probably would end up making far more money that way. But when you are bought for $7.5 billion, that’s probably enough to let your new overlords release your game however they want. And Microsoft is hoping this will be the Game Pass driver, more so than anything that’s come before. We’ll see.

Microsoft’s Underwater Data Center A Success; Azure Ahead

Microsoft recently pulled its underwater data center from the seabed floor, discovering that the 864 servers inside were eight times more reliable than those on land.

After two years of being submerged under more than 100 feet of water, Microsoft has pulled its container-size data center from the bottom of the North Sea, discovering that servers in its underwater data center were eight times more reliable than those on land.

The goal of Microsoft’s Project Natick was to test and monitor the performance, reliability and failover of the purpose-built underwater data center, dubbed the Northern Isles. The underwater data center contained 12 racks, 864 servers with FPGA acceleration and 27.5 petabytes of storage. It was sent 117 feet into the sea off Scotland’s Orkney Islands in spring 2018.

The result was a success as the servers in the underwater data center showed a failure rate of one-eighth that of land-based data centers, according to Microsoft.

The proven reliability of the Northern Isles has prompted Microsoft to look into leveraging underwater data centers to power the full suite of Microsoft Azure cloud services.

“As we are moving from generic cloud computing to cloud and edge computing, we are seeing more and more need to have smaller data centers located closer to customers instead of these large warehouse data centers out in the middle of nowhere,” said Spencer Fowers, a principal member of the technical staff for Microsoft’s Special Projects research group, in a statement.

The company is looking to eliminate any data latency by placing underwater data centers near coastal cities. In addition, an underwater data center could better secure data, which Microsoft says is a core mission of Azure.

“The fact that they were very quickly able to deploy it and it has worked as long as it has and it has the level of encryption on the signals going to it combine to tell a pretty compelling vision of the future,” said William Chappell, vice president of mission systems for Azure, in a statement. “To learn how to make data centers reliable enough not to need human touch is a dream of ours.”

Initial analysis suggested that the successful failure rate of the underwater data center was due to the static, dry nitrogen environment versus land-based centers with oxygen, humidity, temperature fluctuations as well as with bumps and jostles from human interactions.

The underwater data center was designed with cooling systems and renewable electricity from on-shore wind and solar as well as off-shore tides and waves.

Microsoft is on a journey to become carbon-negative by 2030 through advancing the efficiency and sustainability of its cloud infrastructure. The company has committed to use 100 percent renewable energy in all of its data centers by 2025.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant is one of the largest data center spenders in the world, building and equipping hyperscale data centers across the globe.

Spending on public cloud data center infrastructure jumped 25 percent year over year to nearly $17 billion in second-quarter 2020, according to data from Synergy Research Group, with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google leading the way.

Saint Louis University School of Law was recently featured on TaxProf Blog as being ranked 7th in the nation in a recent study identifying which law schools add the most value to ultimate bar passage rates for their students. 

The three-year study looked at the ultimate bar passage rate performance of 186 ABA-approved law schools for the period of 2017-2019. SLU LAW’s ranking reflects its overperforming predicted expectations for ultimate bar passage based on the undergraduate GPA and LSAT scores of incoming students.

SLU LAW also recently posted its highest first-time Missouri bar passage rate in over a decade, with 94.6% of its first-time takers passing the July 2023 Missouri bar exam.
