The company has the following locations:
a retail store in Seattle
a warehouse in Seattle
a customer support and call center in Atlanta
a team of field workers that provide furniture installation services at customer sites.
Wide World Importers plans to implement Dynamics 365 Finance and Microsoft Azure cloud platform features.
Current environment
Customers may place orders by email, phone, or by using the companys website. The company authorizes and
processes credit card transactions by using a web-based application. Customer, inventory, supplier, and other master
and transactional data is stored in a legacy database.
The company collects feedback from customers by phone or a form on the companys website and maintains the data
in a Microsoft Excel workbook.
Wide World Importers runs on-premises applications to manage payroll and workers compensation. The company has
a set of Microsoft Power BI dashboards that present data from a reporting database.
The company creates a Lifecycle Services (LCS) implementation project and completes Dynamics 365 Finance
onboarding.
The company maintains production, quality assurance (QA), development, user acceptance testing (UAT), and build
environments.
Requirements
General
You must configure a cloud-based Dynamics 365 Finance development environment and enable code extension that
support updates.
You must configure version control and a Build environment.
You must migrate all legacy data to the new system.
You must implement best practices for X++ coding, the data model, caching, and security.
All new code must be unit tested in a development environment and then validated by the QA team before code is
added to source control.
Business processes
You must configure vendor trade agreements.
Products must be shipped directly from suppliers to customers depending on customer location to save indirect costs.
You must collect customer feedback on products shipped directly from vendors.
You must deploy code to a UAT environment for testing before deploying code to production.
You must validate all entries for the purchase order creation form.
You must develop a web portal that allows customers to browse products, place orders, and check order status.
Product data for the web portal must be integrated as periodic batches.
Business systems
You must install and configure a third-party solution for credit card processing within Dynamics 365 Finance. The
third-party company will provide a deployable package.

Despite these seemingly major changes, Microsoft hasn't entirely abandoned VR. The company is focusing on other applications, such as its Microsoft Mesh app, that allows co-workers to meet and collaborate in a virtual space without needing VR headsets. Additionally, Microsoft's partnership with Meta to let Quest users access Office apps and its Xbox Cloud Gaming platform seems to still be going steady.

While Windows Mixed Reality in its current form has effectively come to an end, the platform's underlying technology and partnerships could live on in other forms. As Microsoft refines its VR strategy, it's clear that the focus is shifting towards enterprise applications, collaboration, and interoperability across different VR platforms.

Microsoft's move also has repercussions for developers who had invested time and resources in creating content and applications for the Mixed Reality platform. The abrupt cessation of support raises questions about the fate of existing applications and whether they will continue to be compatible with future Windows updates.

In addition to Windows Mixed Reality, other features that Microsoft has stopped working on include Microsoft Defender Application Guard for Edge, Legacy console mode, and Windows speech recognition.

The virtual reality market is in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment. After a mild splash from the Meta Quest 3, everyone is holding their breath to see how Apple’s ambitious and wildly expensive Vision Pro headset will fare. But Microsoft isn’t waiting to throw in the towel on its VR and AR efforts. The Windows Mixed Reality platform is being officially depreciated — that is, no longer actively developed — as of December 2023.

Windows Mixed Reality debuted along with the ambitious Microsoft HoloLens headset in a technical demo in 2015 and with the augmented reality hardware releasing to developers the following year and full software integration coming in Windows 10’s Fall Creators Update in 2017. Despite high hopes and heavy investment from Microsoft, HoloLens never got a consumer release and saw limited interest from industrial customers aside from a notable contract with the US military. While several demos of the hardware and similar headsets using its design have been impressive, the practical applications have been lacking.

While the VR “metaverse” appears to be a bust, at least as imagined by Microsoft and Meta, Windows Mixed Reality’s combination of VR and AR may have been ahead of its time. Augmented reality is the main new feature for the Meta Quest 3, which has full-color pass-through cameras designed to integrate play sessions with the real world. Ditto for the Apple Vision Pro, which is so dedicated to the idea of users wearing the headset constantly that it simulates their eyes on an external screen.

According to Microsoft’s support page (spotted by Windows Central), the Mixed Reality Portal and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR will be removed in future Windows releases. Users who still wish to access Windows Mixed Reality can still do so, at least for the moment.

Microsoft is giving up on Windows Mixed Reality

The company said this product will be discontinued in a future Windows update and follows a report last year that the company’s mixed reality division is a ‘mess’.

Microsoft has decided to move on from its mixed reality ambitions for Windows, as the products are listed as ‘depreciated’ by the company.

The company said Windows Mixed Reality will be removed in a future software update, along with the Mixed Reality Portal app and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR and Steam VR Beta.

Microsoft first introduced Windows Mixed Reality in 2017 as a way to compete in the growing VR market. The product offers various features for Windows users, such as the ability to play games in VR, watch videos in a more immersive way or have their own mixed reality home on Windows.

But Microsoft’s VR division has taken hits in recent years. Last year saw the company lose HoloLens co-creator Alex Kipman, who resigned after allegations of misconduct towards women employees.

A report from Business Insider last year said Microsoft’s mixed reality division was a mess, with a lack of a unified strategy and internal divisions hampering the company’s efforts in this sector. This report also claimed that Microsoft scrapped plans to develop a HoloLens 3 mixed reality headset.

The Verge reports that Microsoft’s job cuts in January – when it sacked roughly 10,000 staff globally – included many employees working on the company’s mixed reality projects.

But while Windows Mixed Reality is being discontinued, it is unclear if Microsoft has any plans for some of its other VR products. The company focused on this sector during the Covid-19 pandemic as a way to help companies deal with the growing trend of hybrid and remote workforces.

In 2021, Microsoft revealed the Mesh platform as a way to let people feel like they’re in the same room as each other. The company also announced Mesh for Teams the same year.

Microsoft is killing its Windows VR platform — announces deprecation of 'Windows Mixed Reality'
  • Microsoft has added Windows Mixed Reality to the list of features it is deprecating in Windows.
  • The company says support for Windows Mixed Reality devices will be removed in a future version of Windows.
  • This includes support for SteamVR using Windows Mixed Reality VR headsets.

Microsoft has announced that it is deprecating Windows Mixed Reality, with plans to remove the feature in an upcoming release of the OS. Windows Mixed Reality was Microsoft's attempt at building out a VR ecosystem for Windows PCs, but unfortunately this effort has been mostly inactive for a number of years.

While there have been several VR headsets built for Windows Mixed Reality, most of them launched between 2017 and 2021. It's been a long while since OEMs released new VR headsets for Windows Mixed Reality, likely because SteamVR is a much more successful platform with a much wider selection of games.

Windows Mixed Reality is heading to a farm upstate. Microsoft is shutting down the platform, according to an official list of deprecated Windows features. This includes the garden variety Windows Mixed Reality software, along with the Mixed Reality Portal app and the affiliated Steam VR app. The platform isn’t gone yet, but Microsoft says it’ll be “removed in a future release of Windows.”

Microsoft first unveiled Windows Mixed Reality back in 2017 as its attempt to compete with rivals in the VR space, like HTC and Oculus (which is now owned by Meta.) We were fascinated by the tech when it first launched, as it offered the ability for in-person shared mixed reality. The pricey Apple Vision Pro could offer a similar experience when it presumably launches in February.

Microsoft’s platform was ultimately adopted by several VR headsets, like the HP Reverb G2 and others manufactured by companies like Acer, Asus and Samsung. The Windows Mixed Reality Portal app allowed access to games, experiences and plenty of work-related productivity apps. However, it looks like the adoption rate wasn’t up to snuff, as indicated by today’s news.

Despite the imminent end to the platform, it doesn’t look to be impacting Microsoft’s other mixed-reality ecosystem, the HoloLens 2. Microsoft added a Windows 11 upgrade and other improvements for the business-focused headset earlier this year, according to The Verge. It also started shipping them out to the Army for combat tests. Yes. You read that last part right.

However, not everything’s rosy in HoloLens land. Reports indicate that Microsoft has stopped development on the HoloLens 3. A report in 2022 said that the company teamed up with Samsung to make an unannounced mixed-reality device, but Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw said that Microsoft remains "committed to HoloLens and future HoloLens development."

Additionally, Microsoft has made sweeping cuts throughout its VR division, leading to layoffs and the discontinuation of the AltspaceVR app. The company is, however, still developing its proprietary Mesh app that lets co-workers meet in a virtual space without a headset.
