In order to drive a university vehicle, a student must have completed the W&M Van Certification Course. Eligibility to drive a W&M vehicle is contingent upon completion. Individuals who have had a moving violation within the past year are not eligible for the course or approval.  Additionally, two years of driving experience is required.  Completion of this course makes you an eligible driver as a student for the duration of your W&M tenure.

You must register in person with completed paperwork at the Office of Student Leadership Development - Sadler Center 273.  Individuals will not be permitted to sign up without all completed paperwork. Required paperwork includes the following:

  1. Driving Record from your Home State: In order to take the van safety course, you must provide a copy of your COMPLETE driving record from your home state. Consult with your DMV for a transcript. In Virginia (and where available) the printed unofficial driving record is accepted. (Some states do not provide a printable version and it must be requested and paid for through your DMV.)  If you have moved to a different state and your driving record does not show two years, please also obtain your driving record from the previous state in which you were licensed.
  2. Police Van Training Form
  3. Student Driver Authorization

Each class is limited in size so plan ahead and schedule your space early. If you have any questions, call the Office of Student Leadersip Development 221-3300. Student Leadership Development reserves the right to cancel a class with fewer than 6 participants signed up.

Check the Announcement page for Student Leadership Development for current Van Certification Course Session Dates.

Police verification certificate must for Karnataka school vehicle drivers, helpers

Bengaluru: The Department of School Education has made it mandatory for private schools to get police verification certificates for school van/bus drivers and helpers and upload the same on the Students Achievement Tracking System (SATS) portal.

In a circular, the commissioner of the department has asked school managements to compulsorily get the certificates in view of the the increase in the number of child abuse cases during school transportation.

The certificates should be renewed once in two years. “We have issued this circular to ensure the safety of students. Along with the certification, it has been made mandatory to hire only female helpers for school vehicles,” a senior official of the department said.

The circular requires the drivers and helpers to sign the school register twice a day. They must sign the register when they drop the children at school in the morning. Again, after dropping them home, they must come back to the school and sign the register.

It is the responsibility of Block Education Officers to verify if schools are following the safety guidelines for transportation services.

Other safety instructions include the installation of CCTVs on school vehicles and restricting the number of children for each vehicle as specified under the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Act 1989 amended in 2012.

Welcoming the step, the private school managements urged the state government to do the certification free of cost. “In private schools, the staff who are on board today may quit after two months. Getting the certificates now and then will be a burden for the institutions. We request the government to make it free of cost,” said D Shashi Kumar, general secretary, Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka.

National Board Certification FAQs

Should I take EDCI 5515 or EDCI 5959 credits?

EDCI 5515 credits should be taken if you want to use the National Board Certification toward your Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction. EDCI 5959 credits are for continuing education only and will NOT be accepted on your Program of Study for the Master's degree in C&I.

Will there be classes offered to help me proceed through the National Board Certification process?

Yes, a series of seminars and workshops are offered through the Wyoming National Board Certification Initiative each semester. Information about these seminars and workshops is posted and updated on the Wyoming NBC website. Graduate level Curriculum and Instruction credit is available for these seminars (courses listed as EDCI 5515). These courses are designed to support teachers as they grow as professionals and simultaneously proceed through the Board Certification process and the UW Master’s program.

Where will the classes be offered?

The classes are offered around the state of Wyoming to allow participation across the state. Dates and locations for upcoming seminars and workshops can be found on the Wyoming NBC website. Participants enroll in the courses through UW Outreach Credit Programs (toll free phone number: 1-800-448-7801). Up to 9 total credit hours of the seminars can be taken by enrolled graduate students. Up to 9 total seminar/workshop credit hours may be applied as electives in the Curriculum and Instruction Master’s program.

Who will teach these classes?

The seminars are taught by Barbara Maguire, a Nationally Board Certified teacher and expert in the NBC process.

How many times can I take the NBC class?

Graduate students/National Board Candidates can enroll in the seminars as many times as necessary/desired. For those seeking graduate degrees, up to 9 credits can be applied to the Curriculum and Instruction Master’s degree program as elective hours dependent upon the student’s committee approval.

What about tuition?

Students will pay regular graduate tuition for the seminar classes. View the current UW fee schedule

Will I need to complete a Thesis or Plan B paper to finish my C&I degree? No, the NBC Portfolios will be accepted in Lieu of a Plan B Paper for teachers pursuing NBC Certification and a UW Master’s degree simultaneously. This acceptance is dependent upon committee approval (not acceptance by the National Board). An agreement to utilize this procedure and maintain portfolio confidentiality has been reached between UW and the NBPTS (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards). The NBC portfolio must be submitted and defended (in a meeting with the student’s graduate committee) prior to initial submission to the NBPTS.  The committee’s portfolio copies will be destroyed after the defense.

Note: The Rubric for Assessment of the presentation  is provided below.

If I am already a National Board Certified teacher, can I apply my NBC work retroactively to a graduate degree?

No, the program is designed for those working on National Board Certification and a C&I Master’s degree simultaneously.

How do I apply for a UW Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Program?

The graduate application and other information can be found here.

What if I have Additional Questions?

If you have additional questions, please contact the UW Department of Curriculum and Instruction (curriculum@uwyo.edu; 307-766-6371).
