OpenServer 6 offers up to two to four times the performance of the previous version and provides support for up to 32 processors and disk and network file sizes of up to 1 Tbyte. It also brings increased memory support for 64-bit database applications and multithreading support for C, C++ and Java applications through a POSIX interface.

Westrheim said customers and partners won't be disappointed. "It is not only stable but lightning fast. The upgrade offers the latest versions of Java 1.4.2 and popular open-source projects such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, the Apache Web server, the Tomcat Java Servelet, the Mozilla browser and the Samba file/print server. Customers can use the OpenServer desktop interface or the included KDE-based environment.

In the background of the OpenServer 6 launch, Lindon, Utah-based SCO remains embroiled in bitter lP litigation with IBM, Novell and Red Hat over the alleged use of System V Unix code in the Linux kernel, among other copyright issues. In the three years since SCO filed its case against IBM, some SCO partners and customers defected because they wanted to migrate to Linux or feared that SCO would lose its intellectual property battle and go out of business.

Still, loyal SCO partners said customers are ignoring the legal proceedings, and now solution providers hope that the software vendor can hit a home run with OpenServer 6.

Several SCO partners said they soon plan to migrate customers to OpenServer 6. Both the $599 standard edition and $1,399 enterprise edition are being released this week.

Michael Brown, president of The Kingsway Group, a solution provider and an SCO reseller based in Thornhill, Ontario, said his customers have started asking about OpenServer 6. "They want to ensure that it will be as rock-solid and bug-free as OpenServer Release 5, which will be a tough act to follow," he said. "We have already quoted OpenServer Release 6 to one location and will likely start migrating those customers, if it makes sense for them, after a few weeks."

Brown said that this weekend he plans to attend a "Test Fest" for partners sponsored by SCO, HP and iXorg in which OpenServer 6 will be put through the paces on new hardware, older servers and white boxes.

IntelliNet's Westrheim said he has been beta-testing OpenServer 6 and maintains that partners and customers won't be disappointed. "It is not only stable but lightning fast," he said. When should it be used?

Terminology:

Current - Two options, Year and Term, can be set to current, which refers to the current registration term. The current registration term will automatically rollover to the next term approximately 10 weeks prior to its start.

Click the Options toggle to reveal additional display options:

Split list - Adds a header above each course. See example 2 for a preview.

Show all sections - This option displays the outlines for all the sections, including tutorials and labs (e.g, D100, D115, D116, D118). Leaving this unchecked will display one outline for each parent section (e.g., D100, D200), regardless of how many child sections a parent may contain. This helps to reduce duplicate outlines.

CSS Class - Allows an author to provide an optional class name that will apply a style to the contents.

Filters Tab

Course Levels - Filter outlines by course level. Check each level you wish to display. If no levels are checked, the component will list all levels.

Sections - Filter outlines by sections. By default, the component will list all sections.

Columns Tab

Catalog Description: At the intermediate-mid level in listening comprehension and speaking, students will be able to handle general questions requiring concrete information, such as personal background, interests and needs, family, work, travel and limited social conventions; can describe in simple terms visual situations; also to participate in short face-to-face and telephone conversations and understand simple announcements and reports over the media. Expanded Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to develop and put into practice the language and vocabulary needed to survive in daily life situations in which Spanish must be used. Our text contains many practical situations and vocabulary often not found in elementary texts. The objective of the course is to help students overcome the frustration of being at a loss for words in a given situation where they have to communicate in Spanish. Certain aspects of Spanish grammar and usage will be highlighted and practiced as needed in order to further enhance communication skills at the intermediate level.

There will be one vocabulary quiz per chapter, through chapter 4. Each vocabulary exam will cover the essential content of every four chapters. While the vocabulary quiz will be made up of a mere list of words and expressions, the vocabulary exam material will appear in meaningful contexts, either sentences or paragraphs.

In both the group and individual oral presentations each individual student’s oral communication skill will be evaluated. A passing grade (C-) on an oral is defined as communicating in Spanish and being reasonably understood, although the student may have poor pronunciation and a minimal working knowledge of the appropriate grammar and vocabulary. Students are encouraged to come prepared in advance of their oral presentations and may use 3X5 note cards, graphics, etc. Students should see the tutors for their presentation.

Attendance: Regular class attendance is required of all students who wish to excel in this course. Each student begins with 100 pts. and 3 pts. will be deducted per class missed. Course Outlines

A one-page course outline is required by university policy for every course offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences. Instructors will receive an email reminder through TRACS to upload their course outlines. Outlines must be available to students at least two weeks prior to the start of the registration period or two months before the semester begins (March, July and November). Note that the one-page outline is different than the syllabus. See below for syllabus information.

Instructors upload their course outlines online. Please follow these instructions:

1.    Log in to outlines.sfu.ca.
2.    Select semester, course and section.  Click the round icon.
3.    Input data to the fields.  (This can be done by free-format typing or cutting & pasting)
4.    Save.
5.    Scroll back up to the top of the page to confirm that the outline was saved successfully. (See green box)
6.    Once the outline is finalized, click “Continue”, go to the next page, and click “Submit”.
7.    The system will automatically advise the program assistant that the outline is ready to be activated.

Before your outline is activated online, the program assistant will review to ensure that all required fields are complete. 

If you have taught the course before, you may want to use the previous outline as a starting point and make any desired changes. The course content should correspond to the SFU Calendar description. If it does not conform closely, you must apply for approval before any changes can be published. Contact the appropriate program assistant, depending on whether you are teaching an undergraduate or graduate course, if you have not taught a course before and would like a copy of a previous course outline for your reference, or if you would like to apply for approval to upload content that does not closely conform to the SFU Calendar description.

This one-credit course focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary for successful college-level academic research and writing in the U.S.. Instruction is tailored to multilingual students (international or immigrant students from non-English-speaking backgrounds). Students can register through the first couple weeks of class by contacting the Multilingual Academic Support Coordinator. 

Advanced Writing Studio for Multilingual Studnets (GES355) is a one-credit Fall semester course that students can take in conjunction with a class that requires substantial writing and research, including a formal research paper that synthesizes information from a variety of properly documented sources. Students can register through the first few weeks of the Fall semester by contacting the Multilingual Academic Support Coordinator.

Testing support options may be available for multilingual students through the Academic Enrichment & Support Center (AESC). Schedule an appointment with Ruth Nelson, Co-Director of AESC.

Language Credits

You may be eligible for up to 8 language credits to reflect your achievement of National Foreign Language Standards (NFLS). Please contact the Language Testing Coordinator, to set up an appointment (language-testing@bethel.edu). The Coordinator will determine to what extent you meet the NFLS criteria and assign credits as appropriate.

Individual Tutoring

If you’re struggling with assignments, studying or understanding course concepts, you can apply for individual peer tutoring.

Tutors provide one-on-one assistance for your course, 2 hours per week. Tutors are Bethel students who have completed the course for which they tutor. Students working with individual tutors complete coursework before tutoring sessions, then meet with their tutors to review, clarify and solidify their knowledge.

McTerminals Give The Hamburglar A Chance

The golden arches of a McDonald’s restaurant are a ubiquitous feature of life in so many parts of the world, and while their food might not be to all tastes their comforting familiarity draws in many a weary traveler. There was a time when buying a burger meant a conversation with a spotty teen behind the till, but now the transaction is more likely to take place at a terminal with a large touch screen. These terminals have caught the attention of [Geoff Huntley], who has written about their surprising level of vulnerability.

When you’re ordering your Big Mac and fries, you’re in reality standing in front of a Windows PC, and repeated observation of start-up reveals that the ordering application runs under an administrator account. The machine has a card reader and a receipt printer, and it’s because of this printer that the vulnerability starts. In a high-traffic restaurant the paper rolls often run out, and the overworked staff often leave the cabinets unlocked to facilitate access. Thus an attacker need only gain access to the machine to reset it and they can be in front of a touch screen with administrator access during boot, and from that start they can do anything. Given that these machines handle thousands of card transactions daily, the prospect of a skimming attack becomes very real.

The fault here lies in whoever designed these machines for McDonalds, instead of putting appropriate security on the software the whole show relies on the security of the lock. We hope that they don’t come down on the kids changing the paper, and instead get their software fixed. Meanwhile this isn’t the first time we’ve peered into some McHardware.
