An issue prevented people from using many of the features of the “Automations” tab in the Google Home app.

Update: This particular issue has now been resolved, but you’ll need to sign in to your Google Account again.

In the Google Home app, the Automations tab offers a master list of all of your custom-built Google Assistant routines. For instance, I have a routine called “Pizza Time” that sets a 15-minute timer, while far more complex routines can be created with scripting.

As spotted on our own devices, it seems that the Automations tab is not working at its fullest as of Wednesday. While running a particular routine works as expected, it’s currently not possible to create a new routine or edit an existing one. Upon attempting to do so, a curious 403 error appears instead, as seen below.

We’re sorry, but you do not have access to this page. That’s all we know.

Update 1/5: As of this morning, it seems that Google has found a way to address this issue. Rather than serving the above error page, the Google Home app may lead you through the process of once again logging into your account.

Once signed in again, the app may open your Assistant routines page in Chrome rather than within Google Home. However, you can simply close Google Home and open it again, and everything should work as expected.

As a side note, it’s interesting to learn that the full Google Assistant routines page, with full access to creating, running, and editing automations, is accessible via the web.

Curiously, the issue does not seem to affect all devices. My colleague Abner Li is not receiving the error, while all other 9to5Google team members are, including one outside of the United States.

One person on Reddit reported the issue at around 9:30 a.m. PT, suggesting that this has been ongoing for a few hours now. We’ll keep an eye on this 403 error over the coming hours and update this post once things have been resolved and the Automations tab is working again.

In the meantime, if you desperately need to create a new routine before this issue is resolved, the Google Home web app appears to be unaffected. While the simplified routine creation flow isn’t available there, you can create a script-based routine.

Google banned 13 infected Android apps, so delete them from your phone

For what will hopefully be the last time in 2023, we have a few more malicious Android apps to warn you about. The McAfee Mobile Research Team recently uncovered 25 apps infected with Xamalicious malware, several of which were distributed on the Google Play store. Google has since removed the apps, but they might still be on your phone. If so, you should delete them as soon as possible and keep an eye on your accounts.

As the McAfee researchers explain, Xamalicious is an Android backdoor built on the Xamarin open-source mobile app platform. Apps infected with Xamalocious use social engineering tactics to gain accessibility privileges, at which point the device begins communicating with a command-and-control server without the device owner being any the wiser.

That server then downloads a second payload on to the phone that can “take full control of the device and potentially perform fraudulent actions such as clicking on ads, installing apps among other actions financially motivated without user consent.”

“The usage of the Xamarin framework allowed malware authors to stay active and without detection for a long time, taking advantage of the build process for APK files that worked as a packer to hide the malicious code,” says McAfee’s Mobile Research Team. “In addition, malware authors also implemented different obfuscation techniques and custom encryption to exfiltrate data and communicate with the command-and-control server.”

Once again, these apps are no longer available to download on Google Play. That’s the good news, but Google can’t remotely remove the apps from your phone if you already downloaded them. Be sure to do a quick sweep of your app list to be safe.

UPDATE: Google spokesperson Ed Fernandez reached out to remind us that Google Play Protect shields users from malware no matter where it comes from. If an Android user did download one of these apps, they would have received a warning, and it would have been automatically uninstalled. Also, if they tried to install the app after the malware was identified, they would get a warning, and Android would block them from downloading it.

Initially, the Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment in Labs was expected to “end” in December 2023. But with the latest redesign of the Google Labs website, many have noticed that the end date for SGE has disappeared.

What does this mean for Google SGE and the future of generative AI in search? Here’s what we know about Google SGE and what we can expect with generative AI in search for 2024.

Consumers Want AI-Powered Search

According to a survey of 2,205 adults in the United States, the AI-powered product that people are most interested in is search.

Also included in the list of AI products are AI-powered smart assistants, shopping recommendations, and ads. (Feb 2023)

Over 25% Of Users Trust AI-Powered Search Results, Brand Recommendations, And Ads

The same survey revealed the level of trust that US adults have in AI-powered search regarding unbiased search results, recommended brands, and ad relevancy.

Also worth noting is that almost a third of AI-powered search users believe the results are factual.

29% Of Adults Would Switch To AI-Powered Search

Regarding the adoption of AI-powered search, 40% of millennials are willing to make the switch to an experience like Google SGE.

Google’s Biggest Priority: The Evolution Of Search With AI

During the Q2 earnings call in July, Google CEO Sundar Pichai described the evolution of search with generative AI as one of Google’s top priorities.

This quarter saw our next major evolution with the launch of the Search Generative Experience, or SGE, which uses the power of generative AI to make Search even more natural and intuitive. User feedback has been very positive so far.

SGE answers questions and provides new paths for search users to follow.

It can better answer the queries people come to us with today while also unlocking entirely new types of questions that Search can answer.

For example, we found that generative AI can connect the dots for people as they explore a topic or project, helping them weigh multiple factors and personal preferences before making a purchase or booking a trip.

We see this new experience as another jumping-off point for exploring the web, enabling users to go deeper to learn about a topic. I’m proud of the engineering excellence underlying our progress.

Google aims to continue increasing the speed of AI responses in search.

Since the May launch, we’ve boosted serving efficiency, reducing the time it takes to generate AI snapshots by half. We’ll deliver even faster responses over time.

We’re engaging with the broader ecosystem and will continue to prioritize approaches that send valuable traffic and support a healthy, open web.

Unsurprisingly, Google is testing new ad placements.

Ads will continue to play an important role in this new Search experience. Many of these new queries are inherently commercial in nature. We have more than 20 years of experience serving ads relevant to users’ commercial queries, and SGE enhances our ability to do this even better.

We are testing and evolving placements and formats and giving advertisers tools to take advantage of generative AI.

During the most recent earnings call in October, Pichai offered more updates to SGE.

We’ve learned a lot from people trying it, and we’ve added new capabilities, like incorporating videos and images into responses and generating imagery. We’ve also made it easier to understand and debug generated code.

Direct user feedback has been positive, with strong growth in adoption.

In August, we opened up availability to India and Japan, with more countries and languages to come.

Google is prioritizing approaches that continue to drove organic search traffic to websites.

As we add features and expand into new markets, we’re engaging with the broader ecosystem and will continue to prioritize approaches that add value for our users, send valuable traffic to publishers, and support a healthy, open Internet.

With generative AI applied to Search, we can serve a wider range of information needs and answer new types of questions, including those that benefit from multiple perspectives.

We are surfacing more links with SGE, and linking to a wider range of sources on the results page, creating new opportunities for content to be discovered.

Google considers Bard a complimentary product for SGE users to boost productivity and connect users to their Google Docs and Gmail.

The second area we are focused on is boosting creativity and productivity. Bard is particularly helpful here; it’s a direct interface to a conversational LLM, and we think of it as an early experiment and complementary experience to Google Search.

Over 20% Of People Use Generative AI Regularly

McKinsey & Company’s State of AI report from August offered a breakdown of generative AI use at work and outside of work by industry based on a global survey with 1,684 participants.

Google To Maintain Lead In Search With Massive Dataset

In October, Baron Insights shared an analysis of generative AI applications, noting that Google would maintain its lead in search with the “largest set of consumer data” of any of its competitors.

However, we believe Alphabet will maintain its leadership role due to its dataset advantage derived from having over 90% of broad search queries, interactions with an estimated four billion consumers globally, and scaled and highly specific infrastructure to provide search-like results.

Alphabet’s dataset advantage also reaches well beyond search into domains such as maps, images, videos, audio, home devices, mobile phones, travel, and retail.

The advanced capabilities now include synthesizing data, generating creative content, and building upon previous searches. How to Set Up Your Google Home App

Even without devices like the Google Mini or Google Nest Displays, the Google Home app can accomplish a lot when it comes to your smart home: it works like a dashboard for all your smart devices. And if you’re using Google Wifi routers, all of the information about your wifi network—including current connection speeds and what devices are using the network—is contained there. You can even prioritize or block devices from the network or change a network name.

In short, the Google Home app can serve as a digital hub for all your automations, and a record of all the activity across your devices from Google Home. It is a powerhouse of an app, and it takes almost no time to set up. 

Download the Google Home app for your mobile device

You might think Google Home is an Android exclusive, but if you prefer to skip Apple's Homekit app, you can use Google Home on your iPhone, too. While you’ll need a Google account to set up the app, you don’t actually need any smart devices, yet. 

Associate your Google Account with Google Home

In order to set up the app, you will need a Google account, like Gmail. If you have more than one Google account, consider carefully which you’ll use. Setting up your home devices on a work account may not be a great idea; you want to ensure this is an account only you can control.

In the bottom right of the screen, you’ll see a button that says “Get Started.” Click on that button to proceed. On the next screen, enter the Gmail account you’ve chosen to use. You may need to enter a password for the account even if you’re already signed in on the mobile device. 

Add services to Google Home

You should arrive back on the home screen now and see the “link services” option. While this is optional, you’ll find that linking media services to your account can be useful. For instance, if you want to be able to ask Google to play a particular song, it'll pull that song from Spotify, but only if you have a Spotify account. 

You’ll see all the available services from YouTube to Netflix available, and can work your way down the list.

Set up a new home in your Google Home app

Google wants to know where you are so it can give you more accurate information. For instance, in order to tell you the time, it needs to know your time zone. In order to tell you the weather, it wants your address. As you add devices, it wants to know what room they’re in, so when you say, “turn off the living room lights,” it knows which lights you’re talking about. Accomplishing all those tasks starts with setting up a home in Google. You’ll likely only have one (the house you live in) but if you’ve got Google set up at your office or a second home, you can add additional homes. 

By clicking the “Get Started” button in the middle of the home screen, you can set up your first home. Google will ask for a name; you can call it whatever you want, including simply "home."  Google will guide you through adding your address, which is optional, but for the reasons above, you should probably include it.

Adding devices to Google Home

At this point, Google Home is set up. You don’t need to add a device, but it’s likely why you got excited about the Home app in the first place, so let’s add one. If you have a smart TV, any Google device from a Chromecast to a Nest device, or any other smart device, it likely works with Google Home and can be added. So, to start, go to “New Device” and it will ask you to help classify the kind of device:

  • A Matter enabled device: Your device will be quite clear about being Matter enabled, if it is. It would be on the packaging somewhere or in the name of the device. 

  • Google Nest or partner device: Anything from the Google lineup, such as a Mini, Chromecast, or Nest. 

  • Works with Google Home: This is any device that has its own app that you’ve already added the device to. For instance, Meross devices, SmartThings, Eufy, iRobot, Govee, LG, Leviton, etc. Google Home has thousands of integrations, and clicking on this option will show you all the ecosystems that connect with Google. 

Depending on which you choose, the next steps will differ. For a Google Nest device, you’ll be asked to turn on Bluetooth and it will search for the device. Once it finds the device, it will go through a series of guided actions to connect to the device via wifi, then name the device, and categorize it into a room. 

For third-party devices that work with Google Home, you’ll simply find the service and then authorize it to connect to Google Home. You’ll sign into the ancillary service, and then be asked what rooms to place the devices in. 

For Matter devices, you’ll be asked to scan a QR code that appears on the device somewhere, which will kick off some guided actions to connect to the device. 

Managing Devices in Google Home

From the “Devices” tab, you can control and manage these home devices. By long pressing on one, you can access the settings for it. You can move rooms or change any other settings available via the dashboard. On some devices, particularly those that “Work with Google” but have their own app, you’ll likely have fewer controls in Google Home than you would in their native app, but you should always be able to turn the device on and off.

Google's AI-powered note taking app is now available for all users

Google's experimental app, NotebookLM, is now rolling out to more users in the US aged 18 and up. The app leverages Gemini Pro, Google's latest AI model, to provide a unique note-taking experience. It transcribes speech to text, offers relevant actions based on notes, generates concise summaries, and allows visual organization of ideas. NotebookLM is an AI-powered alternative for effective note-taking, suitable for students, professionals, and anyone seeking to capture and organize their ideas. From time to time, Google does release certain ‘experimental’ apps. These apps aren’t initially rolled out to all users but a small group testers and then if they are a ‘success’, then they are rolled out a wider group of users. Google today announced that its most powerful and capable generative AI model, Gemini, is now available to enterprises for their app development needs.

Announced last week, Gemini comes in three sizes: Ultra, Pro and Nano. With today’s move, the Sundar Pichai-led company is making the Pro version of the model accessible via API. It can be used for free for now, but there are certain usage limitations, the company wrote in a blog post.

In addition to this, it also made a bunch of other announcements in the AI space, including an upgraded Imagen 2 text-to-image diffusion tool and a family of foundation models fine-tuned for the healthcare industry.

Gemini Pro for developers: What to expect?

The first version of Gemini Pro is available via the Gemini API in the Google AI Studio – which gives developers a web-based developer platform to develop prompts and then get an API key to use in app development. It comes with a 32K context window for text generation, which the company says will be expanded in the future.

“We’ve also made a dedicated Gemini Pro Vision multimodal endpoint available today that accepts text and imagery as input, with text output,” Google wrote.

In an X post announcing the availability, Pichai pointed out that the Gemini API gives developers access to a full range of features, including function calling, embeddings, semantic retrieval, custom knowledge grounding and chat functionality. It also supports 38 languages across 180+ countries. 

Beyond the AI Studio, Gemini Pro is also coming on Vertex AI, Google Cloud’s end-to-end AI platform that includes tooling, fully-managed infrastructure and built-in privacy and safety features for AI development. This gives developers an option to transition to a fully managed environment whenever needed.

Ultimately, the company plans to learn from developer feedback to fine-tune Gemini Pro and move towards the launch of the bigger Gemini Ultra next year. It has been built for more complex tasks.

Free but with a catch

As of now, Google says, Gemini Pro and Gemini Pro Vision can be accessed for free with a rate limit of up to 60 requests per minute. The same applies to developers using the models on Vertex AI – but only until general availability next year. Google says that the free quota is 20 times more than other offerings and should be suitable for most development needs. 

That said, once the offering is generally available, the company plans to charge per 1,000 characters or images across both Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.

Specifically, the input price of Gemini Pro is kept at $0.00025 per 1K characters and $0.0025 per image, while the output price for both remains the same at $0.0005 per 1K characters.

As some have observed on X, this is far more than comparable pricing from rivals such as OpenAI’s GPT, since Google is charging “per character,” i.e., each letter or number generated by the AI model, versus OpenAI’s and most other AI companies’ “per token” pricing, wherein a numeric token can be used to represent entire words.

In addition to bringing Gemini Pro, Google updated Vertex AI with Imagen 2, its latest text-to-image diffusion technology. Imagen 2 brings many new features, including the ability to generate a wide variety of creative and realistic logos, emblems and lettermarks.

Plus, it can deliver improved results in areas where text-to-image tools often struggle, like rendering text in multiple languages.

The company also said it is making MedLM, a family of foundation models fine-tuned for the healthcare industry, available to US-based organizations via Vertex AI. It builds on the Med-PaLM 2 foundation model introduced earlier this year and is expected to get a Gemini-based upgrade soon.

Google is hitting the foldables market in style with the Google Pixel Fold. The pricey book-style phone brings Google's elite photography smarts to the folding form factor, plus the Tensor G2 chip, an IPX8 rating for water resistance, and a huge 7.6-inch AMOLED 120Hz internal display.

Google officially unveiled the Pixel Fold at Google I/O on March 10, 2023. It comes in two colors — Obsidian and Porcelain. You can also choose between three official Pixel Fold cases in Hazel, Porcelain, and Bay colors (pictured above).

Google is charging a similar price to the rival Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The 256GB variant of the Pixel Fold will cost you a whopping $1,799. The 512GB version is even more expensive at $1,919, which seems costly for Google’s first attempt at a foldable phone.

Google hopes you buy the foldable Pixel for its thin form factor, “true pocket size,” loaded camera features, “all-day battery,” multi-tasking skills, and long-lasting software support. However, you can decide if that price is justified in our review of the device.

As for availability, Google is not casting a very wide net for the Pixel Fold. The handset will only sell in the US, UK, Germany, and Japan, at least to start with. The Pixel Fold is available for pre-order starting May 10, with general sales in June. Everyone who buys the device gets a 2TB Google One plan for six months and a three-month subscription to YouTube Premium.

There’s also a trade-in program for those who want to switch their current handset for the foldable. Google accepts products from Apple, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, and Samsung, and the trade-in’s value differs between the various models. Notably, you can also trade in Google Pixels. As Google’s first foldable, the Pixel Fold aims to provide a different experience to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series. For starters, the company has optimized over 50 Google apps for the larger screen. Some of these apps will be Pixel-first and won’t be available on foldables from other brands.

Google has also worked with some major apps like Spotify, Disney Plus, TikTok, eBay, Canva, and more to optimize them for the inner folding display. Streaming apps like Netflix, YouTube, and even Peloton support the Pixel Fold’s Tabletop mode (pictured above) for hands-free viewing.

Besides app optimizations, which Google says is a continuous effort, the Pixel Fold also has some cool multitasking tricks up its sleeve. You can drag and drop images, videos, links, and more between apps on the two sides of the display. A split screen view also lets you open two apps side-by-side.

Perhaps one of the most interesting features of the Pixel Fold is the Live Translate Interpreter Mode. It allows users to simultaneously utilize the inner and outer screens for easier face-to-face conversations in different languages. This feature might not be available at launch, though. Google says support will roll out in the fall. Also, it won’t be available in all languages and countries.

As for software updates, Google promises its standard three years of Android updates and five years of security patches for the phone. It’s still not as good as Samsung’s four-year-update guarantee, but it’s still one of the best update pledges in the industry.

Unlike some tall foldable designs currently on the market, Google insists that the Pixel Fold will easily fit into your hands. The company chose a wider outer display that measures 5.8 inches and comes clad in Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for protection. When folded, the phone has a 3.1-inch width. Add on an official case, and it becomes 3.2 inches. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s outer screen is 2.64 inches wide, so you’re getting wider real estate on the Pixel Fold on the outside. According to Google, current foldable phones in the market don’t have a very usable front display. Hence, it went with a wider screen. Based on our hands-on experience, this was a good decision by Google. The Pixel Fold is far more accommodating to use folded than the Galaxy Z Fold, thanks to this wider display.

In terms of thickness, the Pixel Fold measures just over 12mm deep without the camera bump when folded compared to the 14.2mm measurement of the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

The inner display of the Pixel Fold measures 7.6 inches and is protected by ultra-thin glass (UTG), just like the Galaxy foldables. You get a 120Hz refresh rate both inside and outside.

The 180-degree Fluid Friction hinge that takes the phone from its folded to unfolded state and opens at any angle is made of stainless steel. Google calls it the “most durable hinge of any foldable phone.” This claim is based on the company’s own durability testing, which included 200,000 folds and tumble drop tests of one meter. Despite the testing, Google clarifies that the Pixel Fold is not drop-proof.

Like the current crop of foldables, the Pixel Fold is not exempt from the display crease curse. During our hands-on time with the phone, we did note a noticeable crease down the middle of the main display. It’s actually more pronounced than its competition from Samsung and especially OPPO. Granted, there are bound to be a few Google Pixel Fold issues as this is the company’s first foray into the folding space.

The good news is that the Pixel Fold is one of the few foldable phones on the market with an official IP rating. It’s IPX8 rated just like the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which means it can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. The back of the phone is also covered in Gorilla Glass Victus, and the frame of the phone is made of aluminum.

The Pixel Fold has five cameras in total. Three are on the rear, one on the outer display, and one on the inner folding screen. The main camera array leads with a 48MP wide shooter. That means you can expect pixel-binned shots of 12MP from it. Then comes a 10.8MP ultrawide lens with a 121-degree field of view. Another 10.8MP telephoto camera completes the primary setup. It can take 5x optically zoomed shots and also supports Google’s 20x Super Res Zoom.

Up front, you get a 9.5MP wide-angle lens, and the folding screen features an 8MP shooter for when you want your video calls on the big screen.

Google is sticking to the tried and tested Tensor G2 chip for the Pixel Fold and is the muscle behind the aforementioned camera system. That means we can expect the same impressive AI-backed processing that we saw on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. You also receive 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM on the Pixel Fold alongside options for 256GB and 512GB internal storage.

For a quick reference, the graph below shows where Google’s Tensor G2 processor has stacked up against the competition in the past. It’s not the most powerful chipset on the market, but it handles everyday tasks more than well enough. We’re expecting performance in the Pixel Fold to land somewhere in the same ballpark as the Pixel 7 series. However, the current chip already runs hot, so we’ll watch how the chip fairs in the more constraining foldable form factor.

The entire package is powered by a 4,821mAh battery, which Google claims will easily last you over 24 hours. The company has opted for a dual battery architecture inside the Pixel Fold.

Google says you can stretch the Pixel Fold's battery life to 72 hours.

Google believes you can stretch the battery life to 72 hours, provided you use your Pixel Fold in the Extreme Battery Saver mode. But we doubt many folks would like to do that since the mode turns off many features, pauses most apps, and slows down processing for even more time between charges. Nevertheless, even 24 hours of screen-on time should be great. Google says it came up with the figure after observing a median user using the phone across a mix of talk, data, standby, and other features.
